1. The backside is open.

Why is this so important?

First of all, because it makes it much easier and simpler to read the text corresponding to the image that the audience is seeing.

Second, you always know exactly what image is being seen on the other side because you have a thumbnail of it at the top of the text.

And finally, this makes it much smoother to slide the story cards and put them back in the theater. If you practice it, you can get to do it in less than 2 seconds!

2. The story cards can be slid to the left or to the right of the theater.

The transition of the story cards is a crucial moment in a Kamishibai storytelling and can have enormous meaning. Depending on the contents of the next story card, you can decide which way to slide it and how, or even show only half or part of the next story card.

If you had to "fish" the cards from above, or if the theater forced you to take them out in only one direction, none of this would be possible.

3. Its three doors allow the magic to happen.

By sliding the cards to the left or to the right, your hand will be hidden by the side doors of the theater. It'll look like the story cards are moving on their own as if by magic!

The top door also has a very special round shape that allows you to hide behind the theater without being seen, if you wish.
